Dear Project Neighbors,

The Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project is kicking off a series titled “Get To Know Your Stations”. This series will highlight construction progress of the eight new stations as we near the project’s construction completion. This week we bring you the Expo/Crenshaw and Martin Luther King Jr. Stations!

The future Expo/Crenshaw Station is the northernmost station of the project and will be located across the street from the existing Metro’s Expo Line at Crenshaw and Exposition Boulevards. As the northern terminus of the new rail line, a transfer onto Metro’s Expo Line will connect riders to downtown Los Angeles and downtown Santa Monica. The future Martin Luther King Jr. Station will connect riders to Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza for food, retail, and rich culture at the Museum of African American Art located within the mall. The Martin Luther King Jr. Station will also connect the community to the new Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Medical Offices.

The two northernmost stations have achieved tremendous progress since tunneling was completed in 2017. Both stations have installed escalators and construction of the stairways are nearly complete. Each station will have two sets of elevators; one set to connect the riders from the plaza to the mezzanine level, and a separate set of elevators past the fare gates to connect riders from the mezzanine level to the underground station platform.

The stations and tunnels are nearing construction completion. The additional work includes the final stages of the train power system installation and light fixtures. Both station plazas will have entrance canopies installed in the coming months.

The Crenshaw/LAX Project is one of twelve transit projects funded by Measure R, the half-cent sales tax approved by Los Angeles County voters in 2008. The project began construction in 2014 and anticipates completion in 2020.
